Make a practical UTM naming convention checklist

A naming convention is useful only if people can apply it consistently to the final links. Newsletter and newsletter can create different values; spaces can introduce yet another variation. A short, explicit rule set makes those differences visible.

A practical check

  1. Choose required parameters. This first version checks utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign.
  2. Choose whether UTM values must be lowercase, set the expected campaign name if needed, and list allowed hosts.
  3. Run the final destination list, export the evidence, and keep the rule set with the client or campaign.

Example

Required: source, medium, campaign
Campaign: spring_launch
Case rule: lowercase
Host: shop.example.com
Reachability: checked separately

Know the scope

CampaignLint’s Pro rule sets are stored in your browser. Each exported result states the issue found against the selected rules. A match does not prove that an analytics platform will attribute the visit as intended. Consent settings, redirects, channel grouping and analytics configuration still affect reporting; test those in the relevant system.
