Avoid rounding long reference numbers in spreadsheets
A reference number can be longer than the precise numeric range a spreadsheet supports. If the application interprets it as a number, two different references can become the same rounded value. A displayed value that looks plausible is not enough evidence that the identifier survived.
A practical check
- Choose at least one reference with more than 15 significant digits as a test fixture. Keep its original string.
- Mark its column as text before exporting. Do not use a number format to disguise a rounded value.
- Reopen the export and compare the entire string, including its last digits.
Example
Input: 938475628190234567 Chosen type: Text Expected reopened value: 938475628190234567
Know the scope
TableSafe blocks numeric conversion above 15 significant digits and produces text cells when you choose text. Its example workbook includes a long reference and a leading-zero code so you can inspect the result before buying. Values beginning with a formula character remain text in XLSX; the CSV sample prefixes potentially executable values with an apostrophe and tells you when it did so.
